Danny Dietz, seen here in an undated photo, was honored in Panama City Beach Thursday night. Dietz was a member of SEAL Team 10 and was killed in Afghanistan in 2005. His SEAL team was the same as Marcus Luttrell and their fight against the Taliban was immortalized in the 2013 movie “Lone Survivor.”

“Danny did training here, he did his jump school here, and so there’s a lot of memories and just the area here that ties into a part of him that forever leaves a trace of him behind,” said Dietz-Marsh.

One of Charlie Daniels’ songs was a favorite of Danny’s.

“The first day of school that we started driving together. We get in the car and he starts blasting the ‘Devil Went Down to Georgia,’ rolled down every window in the car and is singing at the top of his lungs and I was mortified,” said Bitz.

Charlie Daniels was flattered to hear that Dietz loved his music.

“I had no idea that Danny was a fan of mine because I never knew him personally, you know. I never had the chance to meet him. I had no idea he was a fan of mine. Makes you feel pretty doggone good when people like Danny Dietz listen to your records,” said Daniels

Danny was given the Navy Cross and the Purple Heart after his death. At Thursday night’s event, Vietnam Veteran Jeffery Roy was honored with the Purple Heart.

“My feeling always been that as a survivor I have to be the voice of those who can no longer speak,” said Roy.

Roy feels that by continuing to speak about the fallen they will never be forgotten.

“He was just… he just blossomed into this beautiful soul and I think that’s what I want, that’s me as Momma want him, to be remembered by. Just my biggest fear is I don’t want people to forget who he was and who he is and what he stands for,” said Dietz-Marsh.

All the proceeds from the Charlie Daniels event went towards the Danny Dietz Scholarship fund. You can find out more information about the scholarship fund at .
